Juan Arias, a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), devoted over 21 years of his life to the recovery and detoxification of his patients.  Working as an Alcoholism Treatment Specialist at HIP’s Bronx Mental Health Center, followed by 8 years as a Clinical Network Specialist from which he retired, Arias was deeply committed to ensuring that members at HIP had access to recovery from chemical dependency and received the services needed to manage their illnesses.  Those close to Arias revered his commitment to helping others and his sense of humor up until he succumbed to his battle with bile duct cancer August 15, 2014.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary McCarty-Arias, who plans on continuing his giving spirit by funding the “Juan Arias Scholarship Fund”, which will go towards Juan’s passion for recovery, quality treatment and will be used specifically for program scholarships.

The Inter-Care Foundation is elated that McCarty-Arias chose us as a partner to represent Juan’s vision for his legacy.  She plans on giving to this fund on Juan’s birthday (June 26), and next Christmas.  McCarty-Arias also plans to publish his memoirs at a later date.
